Teenage Entrepreneurs kick the habit
Young business men targeting 1000 smokers in Cumbria
A new approach to the responsible lawful selling of e-liquids and personal vapourisers is launched on Saturday 31st October 2015 in Queen Street, Penrith, Cumbria, UK.
Local residents Tom Holme and Kristian Thompson, who are both aged 19, say they are setting up their first business with the aim of helping 1000 smokers kick the tobacco habit by switching from cigarettes to personal vapourisers ( PV’s).
Tom and Kristian gave up smoking and started vaping more than 4 years ago when the e-cigarette craze was still in its infancy. Tom had started smoking while in the Army and realised how bad it was affecting his health, especially with him suffering from asthma throughout childhood. After leaving Army training due to a back injury he heard about vaping as a safer alternative to using tobacco and set about researching the internet for all the known facts.
Tom’s product knowledge became so impressive that a local e-liquid retailer asked him to take over the management of their shop in 2014.
Kristian joined Tom running the e-liquid shop in 2015 and together they have served and advised many people. Tom helped his mum, his Nan, his aunt and his uncle to transfer successfully from tobacco to vaping; which is officially ‘95% safer than smoking.’
An expert independent evidence review published recently by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking. Their Key findings of the review say the current best estimate is that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than smoking and nearly half the population (44.8%) don’t realise e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking. The review also reports that there is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers.
Tom and Kristian decided to start their own business because the industry was becoming more regulated and it was obvious that standards had to be legally compliant and product quality had to be the very best available. They also knew that the law was changing on October 1st this year when it became illegal for retailers to sell e-cigarettes or the liquid used in them to someone under 18. Tom and Kristian say categorically ‘they will not be selling to under 18’s.’
£10,000 private investment from an ex-smoker
After raising £10,000 private investment from a family member who is also an ex-smoker, they have worked hard to create a new style of retail experience in Penrith. Their new shop has been designed for the best shopping experience offering a selection of quality e-liquids. Tom and Kristian say they have the clear goal of helping at least 1000 smokers successfully transfer to vapourisers by providing a personalised service and free support to both experienced ‘vapers’ and those who, like Tom’s mum, really wanted to stop smoking but did not know how to successfully transfer.
‘I tried really hard to give up smoking for many years but just could not kick the habit. It was with some suspicion and misunderstanding that I took the first step and accepted help from Tom last year after he gave me a personal vapouriser as a Christmas gift. I have now been tobacco free for 12 months and have seen other members of my family give up smoking after switching. I certainly noticed a change in my health and of course my purse.’ Mrs Holme Ex-Smoker.
